If i leave my laptop (acer TravelMate4060) on for days at a time will it harm it at all?

I am a computer tech and in my experience here's the deal: not all laptops are created equally. All laptops are suspectible to overheating under certain conditions, especially ones from Acer. If you keep your vents super clean, run the laptop on a hard surface, not porous, lay it on an EZ lap (fiberglass lift) or a platform with usb fans, you can run your laptop for as long as you want. However, doing so, your RAM memory will eventually be full and need to be refreshed to regain its speed. You can program your laptop to reboot automatically once a day for optimal performance.

If you need help with any of this, you can obtain paid support by calling us toll free at 1-866-631-0985 from anywhere in North America between 7am-8pm Eastern Time. If you live outside this region, you can still get paid support by going to our website and leaving a message. Someone will call you no matter where you live in the world.

Laptop computers are less computer for more money and they're all fragile babies. Choose a desktop over a laptop any day. All laptops are prone to overheating, but we seem to get more problematic Acer laptops than any other brand. If you want to invest in a laptop, get a Lenovo (IBM). They may not be as pretty but they are quality built machines. HP and Toshiba also make decent machines. One last thing, get as much RAM as you possibly can afford.
It's a well known saying that the minute you purchased your computer it's already obsolete. But wait a minute! This may have been true or true-er in the nineties but it's not necessarily true anymore. If you purchased your PC between 2001 and 2002, and run Windows xp, you should be able to upgrade in most cases more cheaply than buying new. See why here: http://www.DrOrdi.com/qanda-e.html

Obtain free computer information and paid support at http://www.DrOrdi.com/qanda-e.html

Wireless connections are fickle. One minute you have an excellent signal, the next it can disappear for a host of reasons, from temperature to interference from items that run at the same frequency. You likely have an IP confusion problem. Double-click on your wireless connection icon at the bottom right of your screen, ie. your system tray. Then click on the Support tab. Look at the IP address: if it doesn't start with the numbers 192.168.0.something then your wireless adapter is confused. (This private IP address group may be different in your region. You should consult your router's guide to verify this.) You need to push it back on the right road. Click on the Repair button and that will hopefully fix it. If not, go back to the General tab and disactivate your wireless connection for a minute, then re-activate it through the Control Panel, Network Connections: double click on the Wireless connection entry that should read 'Disactivated'. It will reactivate or re-enable itself quickly. Follow the same steps as above to verify that your IP address has changed to the 192.168.0.something. If it has you're wireless is working. If not, shut down your PC for a minute, then re-start and re-check your IP again. If the IP still has not corrected itself, then it can be a case that your laptop is not working correctly with the the security protocol of the modem-router, i.e. either WEP or WPA. Change the protocol and if that does not cure the problem, remove the security protocol altogether. However if you remove it, keep in mind that users in a 100 metre radius may use your Internet connection without your permission, suck up your bandwith and commit crimes. Make sure you have File sharing disabled in your laptop so no one can see your files. It wouldn't hurt to change your Workgroup name to something different either: right-click on My Computer, Properties, Computer Name, Change button, then change the name. You must reboot after that. I hope this helps you.

If you need help with this, we can do it for you remotely.
Why is my computer so slow?

This is the most common question that computer users ask. The answer can be simple but not so easy to apply for regular computer users. When your computer is over taxed, it will slow down. It has a fixed amount of memory (RAM, not harddrive space) and when it becomes used up, then your PC will slow down. What are the solutions?

a) reduce the number of programs running at the same time
b) reduce the number of programs loading up at boot or startup
c) clean up spyware and virus infestations
d) get a faster Internet connection speed

To verify which solutions apply to you:

a) shut down some programs. Also, remember that if you have more than one profile running, i.e. your wife or kids each have their own profile logged-on, each of those will also have running programs. Your computer will run more more efficiently if every user logs off after using the computer instead of using the "switch user" function.

b) move your mouse cursor over each icon you have in your System Tray at the bottom right. Remove and dis-activate the 'start up at Windows feature' of any unnecessary programs. Examples of necessary programs are antivirus, antispyware and sound control. Any other programs usually fall in the category of unnecessary: chatting, printing, multi-media, cd-dvd burning programs.

c) Shut down your System Restore on Windows xp and Windows Millennium only and carry out anti-virus and anti-spyware scans. Re-activate System Restore afterwards. Windows xp System Restore can be shutdown this way: right-click on My Computer, click on Properties, System Restore, put a checkmark next to Turn off System Restore, click Apply. To re-activate carry out the same steps as before and remove the checkmark. Windows Millennium System Restore is similar. Some viruses and spyware can be harder to remove. If you need help, obtain paid support at 1-866-631-0985 or 506-386-6824. We can usually optimize and speed up your computer within 15 minutes. It may take longer if you have viruses and spyware.

d) If your computer is only slow when it is delivering webpages on the Internet, downloading email attachments or other files from the Internet, then you may need a faster Internet connection. Your Internet service provider - ISP - will be more than happy to provide you with this upgrade. If you think your connection is slower than the one you're paying for, obtain free assistance from your ISP.

Obtain free computer information and paid support at http://www.drordi.com/qanda-e.html
